The path to becoming an Eagle Scout is not easy. It is the embodiment of the Scout Oath “to help other people at all times.” One of the rank requirements of the Eagle Scout Service Project is to plan, develop and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any religious institution, school or community. Through this requirement, Scouts practice what they have learned throughout their Scouting experiences and gain valuable project management and leadership experience.
Thomas Kapinus, a Boy Scout since first grade, is currently a sophomore at Chenango Forks High School and is a Life Scout member of Boy Scout Troop 152. Children’s Home is excited and honored that Thomas has chosen our agency for his Eagle Scout project; building a dozen homemade lawn games for the youth in our programs to use during their recreation.
Thomas is fundraising locally to help finance this project. Several local businesses have donated materials and extended discounts on supplies needed. Additionally, Thomas is conducting a can and bottle drive to raise money to purchase materials. Donations can be dropped off at Children’s Home main campus at 1182 Chenango St., Binghamton or by contacting the agency at 607-772-6904 ext. 0.
Having a giant Jenga set, cornhole games, ladder golf and ring toss sets will not only provide our youth with fun and entertainment, but it will help create a sense of community. We can use these games at our main Hillcrest campus, our various community programs, our Wilderness Adventure Program – wherever groups of youth can gather for recreation. All of these games can safely be used outdoors to promote health and wellness in addition to adhering to safe social distancing guidelines.
Thomas’ project build date kicked off September 26. He anticipates completing his project in mid-October, when the games will be presented to Children’s Home in an official ceremony.
